The Highlander School - East Atlanta Village
The Highlander School is a new, nature centered learning community that fosters collaboration and a celebration of childhood! We are located in the East Atlanta Village behind the library. Our registration application is available online at
The Highlander School provides care and progressive early education for young children, uniquely tending the whole child, both heart and mind. We are creating a community of inquiry, where children and educators alike are empowered to wonder together and pursue their curiosities. In the context of these meaningful experiences and investigations, teachers support and deepen children’s exploration of math, language and literacy, science, social studies and the arts.
The Highlander School serves young children from infants to five years old and their families living in In-town Atlanta and surrounding communities. In order to meet the needs of our families, we operate a full-day, year-round program while providing some part time options.
We are located right behind the East Atlanta Library at 1212 McPherson Ave, Atlanta, Ga. 30316, in a facility that has operated as a daycare center since 1974. Over the next couple of months, we will be transforming the building into a beautiful and inspiring space for young children and our community. So please look out for us! For information on enrollment, or to learn more about our programs and philosophies, please visit our website, thehighlanderschool.com.
The Highlander School is the vision of Director Rukia Rogers, who has more than 20 years experience in child development, early childhood education and curriculum planning. Her unique interest in reflective practices are reflected in the school's vision, especially as it relates to curriculum planning for young children, the role of documentation in early educational programs, building partnerships with families, creating engaging learning environments and using materials as thinking tools. Originally from Wisconsin, she has a Bachelor of Science in Education from Georgia State University, which includes an endorsement in special education, as well as an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education from Chattahoochee Technical College, with a specialization in program administration. She was instrumental in forging an on-going collaboration with Emory University and Georgia State University, researching the rights of young children and the cultural context of Development Appropriate Practices.
Rukia is committed to creating a community of learners, The Highlander School where:
Children are valued for their ability to do meaningful work, their wonder and curiosity, their perspectives, and ability to play.
Families are valued for their bonds and traditions, their ability to play, their commitment to work, home and community, and their dreams for their children
Staff are valued for their vision, their delight in children, their skill and knowledge, their commitment to families .
Community Builds Natural Playscape at The Highlander School - Photos
The Highlander School in East Atlanta Village hosted a Community Build event to help create a natural playscape, one of the first of its kind in Atlanta! The new playscape design, by Rusty Keeler of Earthplay, was inspired by the hills, rivers, and plants of Georgia and will be filled with art, music, and nature-inspired play features.
The Community Build event involved many skilled volunteers and generous donors. We’re thrilled to bring natural play spaces to our families and East Atlanta. For more information on the Highlander School, please contact Rukia Rogers at
